Portrait painters taking on commissions from families and institutions, and mural painters who paint directly onto walls at a scale no canvas can match, both appear on British Artists as themselves rather than as a roster a gallery compiled. A listing here names the person who held the brush, not an agency speaking for them. Wherever in the country a painter works, the same page connects a visitor to them directly.
Portrait painters and mural painters answer to different demands, and the gap runs deeper than subject matter. A portrait has to hold a likeness steady through repeated sittings, so a painter reaches for a medium slow enough to keep adjusting the face well after the first layer goes on. A mural answers to a wall rather than a sitter, standing outdoors where weather and light shift by the hour, so its paint has to bond to brick or render in ways canvas never has to.
Painters in the United Kingdom train through a small set of well known schools: the Royal College of Art, the Slade, Goldsmiths, Central Saint Martins and the Glasgow School of Art all put graduating work on public view each summer. The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition is open to submissions from painters, the Turner Prize keeps contemporary painting in public conversation, and Frieze London is the major fair for new work. None of that says who is painting and taking commissions this month.
Commissioning a painter starts with looking past finished pieces to how they were made, on a profile the painter writes and maintains without a gallery or agency standing between: ask to see work at the scale you need, a portrait sized for a hallway or a mural sized for a gable end, since the two scales call for different skills, then arrange the commission through whatever contact details the painter publishes there. The same profile links to their works, their events, and a classes page for those who teach.
