Illustration Private Views Across the UK
A finished illustration and the framed original hanging at a private view are not the same object: one is printed and multiplied, the other is the single sheet the artist actually drew, and it is that sheet, along with degree show walls, open studios and life drawing sessions across the United Kingdom, that fills the exhibitions and private views British Artists lists here, posted by whoever is putting each one on.
Illustration's UK calendar runs on degree shows and open studios rather than a single fixture. Degree shows land in June, when illustration graduates hang a year of work for visitors to see. Open-studio weekends, run by the studio providers illustrators work out of, open the same spaces the rest of the year, letting a visitor see work in progress rather than a finished hang. British Artists lists both kinds of occasion as members post them.
Turn up on private-view night and you will nearly always find the illustrator standing there, glass in hand, happy to talk through a spread or a spot commission the visitor has not seen finished. It lingers. The exhibition itself runs on for days or weeks afterward, quieter and better suited to actually reading the work close up, panel by panel, without a crowd between you and the wall. An open studio works differently again: you walk into the workspace itself, sketchbooks and reference pinned up, rather than a curated hang.
Posting an illustration event here does not require the artist role: any member with an account can list one under their own name, and each listing carries their own account of what to expect. A reader can narrow by style before deciding what to see. The illustrators themselves, the finished works they sell, and the discipline hub that gathers everything the site knows about illustration in one place are all close by from here.
